Currently, I'm trying to get rid of my 2002 1.8t jetta, and it is killing me, because the transmission is going bad, coils, and all these things that you'd find if you looked up a jetta on google.

I'm thinking about purchasing a scion tc, and i've seen people on craigslist selling their tc's for reasonable prices at around 20,000=30,000 miles. i know theyre made by toyota, and i'm looking for something sporty. Are there any common problems ( especially engine wise btw i want an automatic ) that i should look out for? I don't wanna buy a lemon! I'm looking for a reliable car that is cheap to maintain and that i only have to worry about oil changes and tuneups..

I would go for it, since its toyota's little brother.. and now a days they have grown reputation for good mileage, reliability, and being unique. (if your deciding to add on performance parts and such there's many sites for that)... but none that i have witnessed on problems, just the problem of having too much fun with your new Scion tC.

Mostly all you need to do is keep it clean thats bout it..

hey there,

i traded in my 2000 vw jetta gls for a 2008 scion tc. like yourself i was having all kinds of problems on that thing including some transmission bugs and electrical quirks. mechanically speaking the tc was awesome in comparison to the jetta. some interior comforts were a little more economy based, braking wasn't quite as solid, some of the handling wasn't quite as refined, but i got far better power and fuel economy than i ever got with the jetta.

now i refer to the 2008 tc in past tense because i totaled it in some icy weather. it wasn't that the brakes didn't work, they just didn't have the same magnitude that i was used to with the jetta. if there was one thing i'd like to see enhanced on the tc, i'd say the brakes.

now, i did end up replacing the 2008 with a 2009. not more than 3 days after driving it off the lot, the steering rack failed. it was a pretty weird fluke i hope will never re-occur. everything was taken care of by my warranty, and i have had no further problems. during the time that i had the 2008, i experienced no problems whatsoever.

as a former vw owner, i can assure that the tc is a much better car and will cost you far less to operate. it will cost you more to insure, however.
